Rural patient assessment with Commwell remote management

July 30, 2023

Introduction

In a rural location, the exceptional performance of our cutting-edge Commwell 12 lead ECG PhysioGlove together with our Health eCare patient monitoring platform, shows remarkable results.
By conducting routine, standard 12-lead electrocardiograms on all patients, we discovered that more than 20% of these patients were diagnosed with previously undetected pathologies, demanding immediate medical attention. Our innovative technology ensures that crucial health concerns are identified and addressed, ensuring a higher standard of care for all.

Background

The goal is to improve medical care available to the Indian population in general and in particular to the neediest rural inhabitants in remote locations. A pilot program was designed to use the Commwell platform due to its easy and very intuitive user interface. Following the initial regular visit with the local clinic team the pat ients were randomly referred to the Commwell Health eCare booths which were equipped with a set of instruments for the measurement of blood pressure, pulse, weight, temperature, oxygen saturation, blood glucose level and a Commwell Physioglove 12-lead ECG.

All of the measurement data was transmitted to a tablet and was automatically uploaded to to the Commwell Health eCare cloud-based remote patient management platform. All the information was made accessible to the local health team.

The Challenge

  • The goal is to improve medical care available to the Indian population in general and in particular to the neediest rural inhabitants in remote locations. A pilot program was designed to use the Commwell platform due to its easy and very intuitive user interface.

Conclusion

In the initial pilot study nominated cardiologists were given immediate access to the Commwell cloud-based monitoring application for expert analysis. Over 20% of the patients were found to have ECG pathologies that warranted physician attention

The team there noted that performing this quick and excellent quality ECG testing with non-skilled personnel, following a short training as a significant milestone and one that makes the Physioglove 12 Lead ECG invaluable for millions of patients in the rural populations.

The pilot program revealed a tendency of accelerated aging of the population, a problem that is bothering most advanced societies. It is worth noting that the Indian population census shows that more than 60% of the elderly population resides in rural areas which further complicates the problem. This aging trend together with the declining birth rate in India indicates that India will be confronted with a huge problem of the future health and wellness management of its aging population. As mentioned above, these problems are even more complex since most of the aging population lives in rural areas. Thus, the Commwell solution provides an efficient and cost-effective solution to the worldwide aging problem, specifically those in remote locations and therefore seems to be a perfect solution for all elderly and rural populations
